China Intensifies Clampdown of ‘Illegal’ Church Activities

China has witnessed an increase in the number of “illegal” Christian groups who have been arrested across the country after a crackdown ordered by the Chinese Government last month, reports a leading Chinese persecution watchdog.

China has witnessed an increase in the number of “illegal” Christian groups who have been arrested across the country after a crackdown ordered by the Chinese Government last month, reports a leading Chinese persecution watchdog.

Since mid-July, a string of arrests and other forms of persecution in at least eight Chinese provinces has taken place including Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Jiangsu, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi and Anhui, according to China Aid Association (CAA). At least 17 Christian leaders of unregistered churches have been detained.

Chinese Christians are only allowed to worship in Communist-controlled churches. All activities outside of designated churches are deemed illegal and members of the underground church face fines, imprisonment and sometimes even torture.

Authorities have imprisoned some while others are punished for hosting Sunday schools in their homes by having their water and electricity cut off by the government.

“The Chinese church believers are faithful peace-makers in building a stable moral society in China,” stated the Rev Bob Fu, president of CAA.

“We call upon the Chinese Government to correct this grave misunderstanding by allowing these faithful to contribute more social services without fear of arrest and retribution,” he urged.

Among the arrested are seven church leaders, including four pastors, from Inner Mongolia during a house church meeting. In the Jiangsu province’s Jianhu city, three other church leaders were wounded and detained after a house church raid during a Sunday worship service. The same church was attacked on July 11 during its summer Vacation Bible School for 150 children.

Meanwhile, prominent Christian businessman Zhou Heng has been under criminal detention since August 3. He was arrested when he tried to pick up two tonnes of Bibles at a bus station sent by someone from another province to distribute to local believers. His detention paper read that he was put on criminal detention for “suspicion of illegal business operation”, according to CAA.

Zhou could be imprisoned up to 15 years if convicted as the Chinese Government only allows officially sanctioned churches to print and distribute limited numbers of Bibles.

The crackdown order by authorities is part of a national campaign against crime and economic disorder in the villages, according to The Associated Press.

“Strike hard against illegal religious and evil cult activity; eliminate elements that affect the stability of village governance,” read a directive posted at the official website of the Ministry of Public Security on July 6, according to AP.

China has increasingly clamped down on Chinese house church Christians and even foreign missionaries as the next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing nears. Between April and June more than 100 foreign missionaries were expelled from China as part of a government-sponsored campaign to prevent evangelization during the Olympics. The government has also reportedly escalated its campaign against unregistered church activities to prevent protests or other disturbances at the 2008 Olympics.

However, the persecution has instead gained international media attention with many human rights and Christian groups calling for people worldwide to boycott the Games if China does not change its ways and show greater respect for human rights, including religious freedom.

Sub-prime shake-out continues but could be positive for gold price

As the sub-prime fallout continues there is the likelihood that the overall US economy will be adversely affected leading to a fall in interest rates and corresponding decline in dollar value which should be positive for the dollar gold price.

It is remarkable how interlinked these days the world’s financial sector has become. While the US and its institutions will have borne the brunt of the sub-prime lending fiasco, there is no doubt too that others around the world will be scratching to preserve their financial integrity and some, no doubt, may fail to do so creating even more doom and gloom in the financial markets.

The latest to report problems in the market include China’s second largest bank, the Bank of China, whose stock fell by over 5 percent yesterday, despite strong profit figures, on news of a reported $9.7 billion exposure to sub-prime loans. This follows on news of problems faced by other Asian banks and some major European ones.

So far, though, there does not appear to have been particularly significant default levels from holders of sub-prime mortgages in the US, but the fear that these will grow as house prices continue to slump seems to have been the principal factor in the financial crisis which has materialised. Confidence is everything in the financial world!

There is also a feeling in the US, most recently expressed by global investment bank Goldman Sachs, that the shakeout will adversely affect the overall US economy which will force the Fed to cut interest rates, which in turn may drive down the value of the dollar assuming European interest rates in particular are not cut at the same time.

If the dollar continues to decline against major world currencies, then the pattern that the dollar gold price moves counter to the world value of the dollar currency should re-boost the gold price momentum which has largely stalled this year, Central Bank sales notwithstanding.

It does seem that the recent high levels of Central Bank sales in the final weeks of this year’s Central Bank Gold Agreement have helped mitigate a sharp gold price increase which might have been expected to have resulted from the dollar weakness and market mayhem. It seems unlikely that sales will continue at such a high level come the end of September when this year’s CBGA sales quota terminates, which could give a final quarter boost to the metal price. The market had not been anticipating the level of Central Bank sales over the past three months and it has to be positive for gold that the price has remained pretty constant given the high disposal levels absorbed.

 My mother-in-law’s name is Shuang Shuying and she is now 77.  She was born into a Manchurian family.  In her childhood, she was the favorite of her father and spent a happy childhood and adolescent years with her younger brothers and sisters.  When Peking (now Beijing) fell to the Communists in 1949, disasters also fell to the family of my mother-in-law. Shuang Deli, the father of my mother-in-law, was arrested by the Chinese Communists on the charge of being a counter-revolutionary.  Their house was searched.  One day in late 1950, the father of my mother-in-law was executed in Xiao Hongmen Township in Chaoyang District of Beijing.  My mother-in-law still remembers that day very well.  Before my mother-in-law’s father was executed, all her family members were hauled to the site of the execution by the police soldiers where they witnessed with their own eyes the whole process their father’s execution.  The cruelest thing about this is the family had to pay for the bullets before they could take back the body to be buried.  After the father died, the family fell into extreme poverty.  My mother-in-law and her younger brothers, sisters, and her mother had to make a living by begging for food.  In the meantime, they had to endure discrimination by the people around them.  To reduce the economic burden of the family, my mother-in-law married my father-in-law Hua Zaichen through a matchmaker.  After the marriage, she gave birth to a boy and a girl.  Though the family was not well-off, everybody was enjoying life. However, the good time didn’t last long.  In 1957, my father-in-law Hua Zaichen was sentenced to “reformation through labor” by the Communist police on the charge of being a counter-revolutionary.  Once he left, he didn’t come back for 20 long years during which my mother-in-law lived in hardship and poverty with the children and my old and sick mother-in-law.  While labeled as the family members of a counterrevolutionary, my mother-in-law worked in a factory for textile equipment during the Cultural Revolution.  The work unit where my mother-in-law belonged tried to force her to confess the so-called “counter-revolutionary crimes” and to divorce Hua Zaichen who was at a labor camp.  When my mother-in-law refused to do so, she was detained at the work unit where they took off her clothes and bound her on a pole and beat her.  They also forced my mother-in-law to kneel on an angle iron.  In the meantime, the young children in the family suffered discrimination and pressure from the teachers and schoolmates, often bullied by the people around them.  One thing that makes my husband feel painful even today is when he had a minor conflict with the son of the director of our neighborhood committee.  The director reported this incident to a policeman named Jia.  This Jia then took my husband to the neighborhood committee where he bound my husband with a thin iron wire. The thin iron wire cut into the thin arms of my husband.  The policeman placed my husband under the chair and then sat on it.  About 20 minutes later, my husband’s arms were swollen and internal bleeding could be seen.  After he came back home, my mother-in-law wiped my husband’s arms with a towel in tears and said: “It is us who have brought you children so much misery.”  From then on, my mother-in-law began to think about giving Hua Huiqi to somebody so that he could live a happy life like other children.  Yet, Hua Huiqi would never want to leave his loved ones.  After my father-in-law came out of the labor camp, my husband and his brothers and sisters had grown up in this nightmarish environment.  In 1990, Hua Huiqi accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. After that, as Gangwashi Church replaced Pastor Yang Yudong, the police often stalked him and beat him.  As my mother-in-law feared for his safety, she began to go together with him to Gangwashi Church for gatherings.  Gradually, my mother-in-law also got to know Jesus and accepted Him as her savior.  In mid 1992, my mother-in-law was baptized in the church.  From then on, my husband’s house became a home receiving brothers and sisters from all over the country.  Though his house was under constant surveillance by the police who terrorized him, my mother-in-law always received with enthusiasm brothers and sisters each time they came.  In 2001, my father-in-law Hua Zaichen and my mother-in-law Shuang Shuying who had suffered so much from the evil practice of “re-education through labor” appealed for abolishing reformation through labor by staging a protest in Tiananmen Square.

 After Beijing succeeded in applying for hosting the Olympic Games, the Chinese Communist authorities demolished by force our house as an unstable political factor under the slogan of “New Beijing, New Olympics.” Our whole family was escorted out of the urban area and locked up in a courtyard called “Family Guan’s Pit.”  The police put us under 24-hour surveillance.  Sometimes, we were beaten by the police.  When brothers and sisters all over the world prayed for us and with the attention of all the people who care for us, we were escorted by force to a place outside the city where we have been living since.  Some brothers and sisters and people with grievances often came to my house.  As a result, we were detained, locked up and beaten by the police numerous times.  They smashed our windows and when we were not at home, they broke in and robbed and stole the properties of my family.  On January 26, 2007, my husband was sentenced to imprisonment on the conviction of “Interference with the Exercise of Public Functions.”  When my mother-in-law tried to win justice from the government in a hurry, she fell into a secret plot by the police and was sentenced to two years in prison.  She is currently detained in a women’s prison.  When my family and I visited her in the prison, my mother-in-law was in an extremely poor health.  Her hands were trembling and she looked very pale.  Just a few hours of sleep a day has seriously damaged the health of my mother-in-law.  She used to weigh 110 jin (121 lbs).  Now she weighs only about 80 jin (88 lbs).  The jeers and verbal abuses she gets from fellow inmates and the police’s terror and psychological pressure have made the old lady all the more miserable.  In the meantime, my imprisoned husband was threatened and terrorized by the police in charge of religious affairs.  They tried to force him to cooperate with them and did not allow him to receive brothers, sisters and people with grievances.  They told him: “If you don’t do what we tell me to do, you may never see your mother again.  You should always remember your mother is in our hands.  All it takes to release your mother is a word from the director of our bureau.”  After my husband came out, the policemen again came to my house and told my husband: “Some leaders just use your mother as a hostage.”  I felt very bad after I heard this.  I appeal to the brothers and sisters the world over to pray for my mother-in-law and beg our Lord to protect her health as she has serious diabetes, high blood pressure, cataracts and neuralgia in peripheral nerves. 

In the meantime, please also beg God to move the heart of the government so that they can release my mother-in-law and let her come back home and reunite with her family.  I also ask our brothers and sisters within the Lord to pray for the Chinese police and government and pray for the detained prisoners.  We sincerely hope God will bless them all.

I sat before the Lord and while grievous on the situations, the Lord spoke Saying:
“The Lord will rebuild the Waste Places”
I then took to scripture to find the Prophets word of the Lord on the matter, here it is:

Isaiah 51:3  For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
Isaiah 52:9  Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.
Isaiah 58:12  And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

God has not forgotten Zion, he will rise against those who tear at her with sword and with fury.
Grievous Wolves have entered in to eat up my people Israel.

The Miracle of an Obedient Heart at the I-35 Bridge

“People were going around me—about 20 feet away from the bridge. That’s when it snapped—[the bridge] broke down and crashed. I saw 2 cars go off the bridge, and I was like…’wow!’”

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a very special account of a miracle that happened the day of the recent bridge disaster in Minnesota. This is the testimony of a young man named Matthew who is not a stranger to the voice of God. The part of his story that I found most remarkable was the fact that his obedience to God ended up saving the lives of many others, who otherwise could’ve just ended up another statistic in this tragedy.

Matthew’s account made me wonder: do we ever stop to think of the lives that are affected by our obedience to the Lord? Not just our own—though we know the Bible says blessing comes with obedience to God—but also the lives of those around us. Every one of us is affected by another’s actions…but can we actually save lives (even unknowingly) just by doing what we know God has asked us to do? (Brooklyn Park, Minnesota)—Wednesday, August 1st, seemed to be a day like any other in the St. Paul, Minneapolis area. But at 6:05pm—in the midst of rush hour traffic—the busy Interstate Bridge that joined I-35 with the city of Minneapolis suddenly broke apart and fell into the Mississippi River.

There have been many accounts already, which have pointed to the grace and protection of God in the midst of such tragedy…. Due to the construction on the bridge, the traffic was not at the normally full flow, or speed. There was a train riding underneath the bridge at the time, which may have stopped some of the collapse. And then the school bus, filled with 50 children that rode the concrete on the way down during the collapse, and didn’t tip over—all the children were saved. (Photo: AP)

And then there is Matthew’s testimony of God’s protection. What happened to Matthew (last name withheld) on the day of the bridge collapse is nothing short of miraculous and amazing!

After being contacted by one of Matthew’s family members, to inform me of his story, I later spoke with Matthew directly. First I asked him go back to that moment, before the bridge collapsed, and explain everything that happened next.

“I was coming home to take a shower, and then pick up my friend across the I 35 W. bridge,” Matthew recalled. “I was headed into the city [of Minneapolis], it was bumper-to-bumper.”

“I was praying and talking to the Lord, and the next minute the Lord gave me this vision. In the vision [the bridge was] shaking—it started to snap and broke through. I saw two cars go off the edge into the Mississippi. Then, [after the vision] I said, ‘What is that all about Lord? You need to talk to me.’”

“God told me to ‘STOP!’” (I was 100 feet away from the bridge)

“He said, ‘You need to stop right there.’ I said, ‘Lord, there are cars behind me,’ (There were about 100 people in the line of traffic behind him, and many had begun honking their horns at him). But God said, ‘That’s okay, you need to stop.’ So I stopped. And then the Lord said, ‘Look.’”

“At first I was sitting in the car waiting, thanking the Lord, because it could’ve been me on that bridge. Then people came up to me and said, ‘Thank you.’”

“I got out and looked from the side [at the collapse]…it was traumatic seeing what happened. And then the police told me to go back in my car and turn around.”

I asked Matthew what he was thinking at the moment he saw the bridge begin to break…

“I was realizing that the Lord is awakening [His people] and saying, ‘Listen to Me, you need to listen to Me.’ I realized that if I [hadn't] listened to Him, I would’ve gotten on that bridge and took a ride.”

“After that I called my friend and told him I couldn’t pick him up because the bridge broke through. Then I went to the Holy Spirit conference [that was happening nearby] and worshipped the Lord!”

I then asked Matthew, “As you look back at what God spared you from that day, and at what happened with the bridge, what immediately comes to mind?”

“When I look back,” said Matthew, “I realize the Lord has a calling [for me], and He’s preparing me to be obedient and ready, and to know it is ‘time to roll’…and to know who Jesus is.”

– ARAD, Israel – The state of Israel promises religious freedom to all faiths.

However, in some Israeli towns, Jews who believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah face persecution.

One of those places is in a town called Arad.

Arad sits in the middle of the Negev Desert, about a two hour drive south of Jerusalem. For most of the nearly 25,000 residents, it’s a quiet setting. But for others, it’s been the scene of noisy protests and almost daily harassment.

An ultra-orthodox sect called the Gur harasses many of the Messianic Jews in the town.

“We meet at a congregation building,” Yakim Figueros, a messianic pastor in Arad, said. “There’s a narrow way to go in, I mean the gate. So they have two of their people standing on either side and reading curses against everyone that walks in: ‘May his children be orphans. May their wives be widows’ and so on. You know it’s not nice for the simple people to come in and go through this.”

The center of town is another place of harassment, where many retired Jewish immigrants gather.

Most of the men here are retired senior citizens from the former Soviet Union. Some are holocaust survivors. They come here to play their favorite game at this chess club called The King’s Men.

Eddie and Laura Beckford established the chess club as a way to serve these men.

“We have books and Bibles in all the languages,” Eddie said. “We always keep a stock of Russian Bibles – Old Testament, New Testament. They have a hunger for knowledge, reading and stuff because I guess books…were abandoned behind the Iron Curtain.”

Laura added, “And we try to meet their physical needs too. Like there’s one man here who needs a hearing aid, so we’re working on that. We’re trying to get the funds for a hearing aid or other physical things, whatever is needed.”

They provide a place to play chess and dominoes which are games these men love. The club set up chess tournaments and also supply used clothing for Bedouins and anyone in the community.

But the chess club has been vandalized and firebombed. Many suspect it is the work of the ultra-orthodox sect. Many of the Messianic Jews have also had their names and faces placed on flyers distributed throughout Arad.

Rebecca Fry is one of those on the flyers. Ironically, she grew up in an ultra-orthodox Gur home. Now she believes in Jesus.

“I know exactly where they’re coming from because when I was a child, I was taught the same thing about the Christians,” she said. “‘The Christians are crazy people, bad people who kidnap children and baptize them and take them to monasteries or convents and lock them up there.’ So I know exactly where they’re coming from. They actually teach you that all the time when you’re growing up – to hate Christians.”

Arad’s mayor hopes these two groups will find a way to live together.

“I try to make both communities try to figure out how to work together, because this is how I believe. I came to the desert for peace not for fight. My feeling is at the end of the day, they will find ways to live. In the meantime, the situation is not so good,” he said.

In the meantime, the Messianic Jews of Arad are relying on and asking for prayer.

“It helped me to pray for them,” Laura said. “I feel sorry for them so it helps me to know where to pray for them and where they’re coming from. But it’s hard when you’re standing there in front of someone who’s yelling and cursing and shouting. It’s hard to see any perspective. But in retrospect, it helps when you pray for them.”

“So pray for a revival, pray for His kingdom, for His Name to be glorified here in Arad and not for the persecution to stop,” she said. “And pray for people to have the courage and strength to stand firmly in the faith.”
