“The Obsolete Man” part 1
Rod Sterling’s lesson here is about the state and the functions of such as it finds men obsolete. Comparing itself to Hitler and Stalin, this state finds a librarian obsolete. He reads books, and performs this function in his room the state has given him. He has a bible which is his most valuable possession. The state thus finds him totally obsolete and worthless to its values.
This is from 1961 and is most relevant today as we see the rise of such a state. It is an object lesson given in three short episodes.
Twilight Zone host Rod Sterling, begins the television segment stating:
“This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace.”
