So, how did all my years of bomb-shelter, gas-mask training pay off? Not well. This media dork, did the exact opposite of what he was supposed to do. The siren rang, and rather than run for shelter, I grabbed my iPhone, went to the window and began filming. Filming just what… I don’t know. I wanted to capture the sound of this treacherous siren and to see out the window of the Tel Aviv skyline, in case something happened.
In a flash, I suddenly heard my co-worker running down the hall, screaming my name. “Chaim, what are you doing?!” “I’m filming,” I told her. “Get away from the window and come down to the shelter,” she shouted. All of this back and forth, you must remember, was happening within the 15-second window we have to get to safety.
Just then, as I turned from the window, stopped recording and headed out the door of my office… silence. And then, a ‘boom’. A boom so penetrating, it shook the building.
And right there, in that moment. I was changed forever. I was now a player in a centuries old drama. I was now living through the latest battle over God’s holy land.

The attacks on Tel Aviv didn’t end on Thursday. They continued relentlessly on Friday, Saturday and twice on Sunday.

I speak only of Tel Aviv, because that’s where I live…but to be sure the southern portion of Israel (Sderot, Beersheva, Ashdod, Ashekelon, etc…) took a bloody and relentless pounding of nearly 1,000 terrorist rockets. Civilians and soldiers were killed. It was a nightmare. The sirens even rang out in Jerusalem. That hadn’t happened in decades!
Then, yesterday, the ultimate of the Palestinian terrorists’ greatest hits. The bus bombing.
On Wednesday morning, a terrorist without even the decency to blow themselves up, placed a bomb on the #142 bus in Tel Aviv and left it to explode, injuring 2 dozen.
It happened just down the street from our Maoz office. This was for me was the ‘final straw’.

Before heading out for work, taking a shower, or even going to the bathroom, I had to plan out in my mind just what I would do in case the siren went off. I had to plan out my route to and from the bus to work… where would I hide? I had to make a peace that if I really were in the shower, I would know that there was no way, I could grab clothes, run out the door and make it to the shelter in time. I had to make peace that perhaps I might actually be killed, and die right there in the shower.
When I got home, I turned on the news expecting to see the worst. But instead, I was jolted to hear the exact opposite. We weren’t expanding the war…we were ending it!
What in the world? Ending the war, after they just bombed a bus?! I was dumbfounded.
At first I didn’t know if this was good news or bad news. The thought of ‘no more war’ sounded great. No friends dying, no more sirens, no more bomb shelters. But…why a ceasefire now? Why did we Israelis go through all of this madness for 8 days? Why did people die? What was this all about?
